Epictetus (c.55 – c.135 C.E.)

Epictetus was born in Phrygia (south-western Turkey). As a boy he arrived in Rome as a slave of Epaphroditus, a rich and powerful freedman. Epictetus studied with the Stoic teacher Musonius Ruful. In about 89 C.E., along with other philosophers then in Rome, he was banished by the Emperor Domitian. He went to Nicopolis in Epirus (north-western Greeece) where he opened his own school.
