Reflection 691

Welcome!

The bathroom mirror

As I watch that white-haired, staring man, unblinking and left-handed, busy trimming his beard in that bathroom, it’s as if a great flood sweeps through this bathroom, carrying away everything human, everything alive, everything existent. In this wonderful Bathroom I bathe indeed: here I’m washed clean of body, mind, life, motion, and all change, clean of all that involved mass of human and animal and material contamination which confronts me there in the next room. Still more wonderful is how this Cleanliness here is alive to itself as spotless through and through, and without having to go an inch outside itself to view itself. I am only here, seeing clearly what I am. My mirror never lies, but brings out with the utmost vividness the total distinction between that man and myself.

From The Face Game by Douglas Harding, page 99.
