Reflections on living from Capacity

Tube experiment 13 February 2011

Richard Lang - Sunday, February 13, 2011
During the workshop yesterday we did the Tube experiment where you look through a paper tube at another person and notice you are face to no-face with them. I demonstrated with the lady next to me, just for a few seconds. She came out of the tube and exclaimed, "I just turned into a man!" :-)

It Does Nothing For me 8 February 2011

Richard Lang - Tuesday, February 08, 2011
Someone just wrote to me, saying the headless method didn't work for them, and asking me why I thought that was. Here is my email back:

Perhaps there are a couple of reasons.

First, you cannot see your head, so you don't fail in that. Everyone can notice this.

But perhaps you are expecting specific results, and you don't get them, so you don't continue noticing you cannot see your head... And if you don't continue, then it certainly won't do anything for you! If you say, "I tried that, but it didn't work for me", it means you are not doing it now, so it won't work for you!

How does that sound?

Yours,
Richard

Workshops

Richard Lang - Sunday, January 30, 2011
We had a good workshop on Friday evening at the Cambridge Buddhist Society - about 30 people present, including some good friends. Then on Saturday I gave another workshop at home - 12 people came. A delightful day!

A Conversation

Richard Lang - Wednesday, January 19, 2011
Here's a conversation I just had with a new friend, Stephane.

Dear Richard,
I do the pointing experiment and the difficulty I have is about the sensation in the body. I can point to the external object and then at me and realize the void here, the me. But the me that I don’t see is confused with the sensation I feel, specially unpleasant feelings like anger or depression or pain. What can I do? Is there an exercise to see that those sensations are not me? … Thanks. This pointing thing is helpful. I wish my sorrow and sadness would end by pointing at me but it didn’t. Stephane.

Dear Stephane,
Yes, it is easy to identify with these difficult feelings.

One experiment involves simply noticing where the feelings are. Are the feelings inside anything? I find feelings happening in the void, just like everything else. The void is not affected by the feelings, yet contains them. This awareness does not always make the feelings go away immediately, though it's evident they are changing all the time.

A problem with difficult feelings is identifying with them, holding onto them. Well, see if they really do attach to the void, so to speak. Isn't the void always free of these feelings, always clear, always empty? I find it so. Stay with this, moment by moment, noticing the difficult feelings in the void - observing them from the emptiness. This is meditation. It's no good just thinking about it, or doing it for a moment. Keep seeing this, as much as you can - and be patient, and kind to yourself!

Also, the feelings are not separate from the rest of the content of the void - the rest of the world. The things you are having feelings about. All content is 'there', and you are free of it all 'here'.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further. Best wishes, Richard.

Hi Richard,
So this is what it is to be everything... this is it? Simple... nothing is happening really. I'm amazed at this. I want to look and look. I'm going to do all the experiments. It's my experience that I am without boundary. The physical tension seems so here still... I can't find any form or size or location to them, but they seem the first thing that pop up in awareness, but then I look at me to see if I can find any boundary to me and of course I can't, it's only space. But something is clinging, irritating because I can't find any center. I don't understand that "central" thing "center". Perhaps you could talk about it to me?

I'm sure you know that this is very helpful and I have no way to thank you. Stephane. (My English is not perfect since I'm French, so maybe my expression seem strange ;)

Hi Stephane,
Well, the irritation is appearing in the 'space'. Of course, 'space', or 'centre' are just words - popping up in the.... 'space'. The space is visible. You are looking out of it. You are it. These are of course words, but words are useful for communicating.

So, you are aware of this space perfectly - there's nothing here to see wrong. You can't see half the space, you see all of it. Even if you feel irritated, depressed, unhappy, it doesn't stop you seeing and being the space... Warm regards, Richard.

Dear Richard,
I just got very frustrated. I wanted to understand it all, to grasp it all, to be omniscient... Then I read lesson 2 again and got what I saw earlier - one essential truth in it: to look again! Look into it further – and keep LOOKING, keep paying ATTENTION to the place you are looking out of, the place you are living from. Haha frustration is going away, my hand is shaky... Thanks. Stephane.

Yes, no one can understand the emptiness/fullness. It's a mystery. Where did it come from? How did it come to be? No answer. You are the One asking yourself, how did I do it? How did I happen? No answer! A wonderful mystery - something to celebrate! Yes, keep looking! Richard

I work with kids and earlier after the e-mails I sent you I went to school to work. I took a few kids and make them do the pointing experience and all of them saw no-thing when they point at their face. I’m gonna do it with all the kids  I can. Their response is a big smile! Have a good day and all the best to you, Stephane.

Saturday workshop

Richard Lang - Monday, January 17, 2011
14 people came to the workshop on Saturday (Jan 15). Most people were new faces for me, but everyone was familiar in some way with headlessness, and no one was resistant. It is a pleasure to spend all day celebrating who we really are! One lady arrived late, after we had already done the pointing experiment. I asked her if she was familiar with Seeing, and she said she had done some of the experiments from the website, and read a book. So I asked her to lead us all through the pointing experiment - I had not met her before. Which she did - perfectly. It was touching - and just shows how simple it is to See this, and to share it. Anyone can do it.

I will keep organizing these day workshops. Anyone is welcome - just book with me beforehand. It's an opportunity to meet other Seers, and be in the Seeing all day.

Today I was driving in my car and had the radio on, and a commentator was talking about how people take for granted various things that many others don't have, and have no awareness of how lucky they are. And jokingly he said that they don't even know they are born! Of course, this is true of us all, in one way or another. We take many things for granted. But almost all of us take our own existence for granted. It is as if it's our right, as if being is totally normal and expected and hardly worth commenting on. "Of course I am! Of course there's a world!" Yet I find it an extraordinary, wonderful, outrageous fact - existence. Increasingly I appreciate this basic fact of being, of existence. The fact there is anything at all. The fact that I am. Amazing. I can find no reason for existence, no explanation of how or why. What is the most overlooked, the least valued, is the most precious and wonderful. Existence is truly a miracle. Of course, you cannot sell it - it has no economic value - so it seems to be worth nothing. But without it, of course, there's nothing. Not even the thought of nothing.

I heard the current Pope is going to beatify his predecessor for a miracle that occurred when someone prayed to him - after his death. Someone got healed. Well, here's the greatest miracle - the miracle of being. Awareness of this miracle is the profoundest healing of all - a healing that ripples out into every area of one's life. Who are we going to beatify for this? Who are we going to praise and adore for this Wonder of Wonders? Look within!

This plain, featureless emptiness, which amazingly is always full, and is awake to itself - what a miracle, what an achievement! The Miracle. The Achievement.

Saturday workshop

Richard Lang - Saturday, November 27, 2010
Last Saturday's workshop - in my home, 14 people for the day. Everyone enjoying being capacity for what was going on, for each other. Here's part of a comment from someone who came (the rest of her comment is in the November 2010 section on the Feedback page).

Since the workshop I have been experiencing this seeing on a more or less constant level. I have the urge to go out, not stick my nose in a book like I usually do for entertainment, but go out, look at all the people, interact, from this new perspective. i want to see how it is now, this dissolving in favour of the other person, and I'm fascinated by what reactions come up in me. I am moved to walk around town and watch from my stillness as the world moves around me, as objects and people arise in my consciousness. And, in a juicy parallel development, reactions in my character that were once unconscious are now presented at me to stare at in the most objective way! I am seeing every single reaction I have in daily life and thinking gosh, that's interesting...

Humble Gateways into Vastness

Richard Lang - Sunday, October 24, 2010
We had a workshop yesterday afternoon here in my home in London (23/10/10). 16 people came. I found myself describing the pointing experiment as 'leading people up the garden path'! The path, from the feet upwards, leads to a threshold, the 'bottom line', the place where your body disappears into vastness... Here is a gateway. Step through that gateway and you enter the greatest of palaces. Douglas Harding sometimes talked about these experiments being humble gateways. He was brought up a Christian and sometimes used Christian imagery - Christ, God in human form according to that tradition, was born in a manger, in the humblest of conditions. Well, the source has now given us these humble experiments, so easily dismissed as 'children's games', as gimmicks - what could be simpler than pointing your finger, or easier for society to dismiss as silly if not stupid, and certainly not deep! - certainly they could never lead us to God... But put aside this social derision, our embarassment, our 'adult knowing' and 'maturity' and employ these humble pointers, and discover that they really do guide us all the way 'up the garden path' into vastness, into our eternal Home, into our One Self.
